A love story about transition, testosterone, and James Dean.
Josh and Isabella are childhood sweethearts. They were meant to spend their gap year together, they were meant to be together forever. But Isabella has now become a boy.
Pronoun was commissioned as part of the 2014 National Theatre Connections Festival and premiered by youth theatres across the UK. Especially written for young actors, the play can be performed by a cast of seven, with some doubling of roles, or a much larger cast.
Pronoun by Evan Placey is a challenging script for young people, exploring the journey of Dean as he transitions from female to male whilst coping with school, relationships and family.
He obsesses over James Dean, and snippets from Rebel Without A Cause mirror the modern day identity struggles.
Pronoun is an important story and the writing had great resonance. It was also refreshing to see a story of female to male transition exploring the constructions of masculinity, rather than the more visible and more frequently discussed male to female.
